The project started in May 2002 with a residency that brought together one hundred artists in Faxinal do C\u00e9u, city of Pinh\u00e3o (Paran\u00e1), in the south of Brazil. The meeting was organized by the Secretary of Culture of the state of Paran\u00e1 and was curated by Agnaldo Farias and Fernando Bini, with consulting by Christian Viveros. In the beginning, The house (or one could also think of it as The house spits) involved a real chalet, typical of the region, that was the guest artist\u2019s accommodation and studio for the duration of the event.<\/p>\n

In this project, exploring the concept of shelter and the familiar notion of housing, Jos\u00e9 Bechara establishes physical, metaphysical and visual relations to the habitat, creating poetic connections with the interior and the exterior of this place. By reorganizing the space with a rigorous method, the artist uses everyday objects as geometric forms, and inverts the idea of shelter by putting objects that relate to the human presence outside of the house.<\/p>\n

The developments of the project were exhibited in important institutions in Brazil, such as the Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) in Paran\u00e1, the Modern Art Museum (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro, Instituto Tomie Ohtake in S\u00e3o Paulo, Museu Vale do Rio Doce in Vit\u00f3ria (ES ), and Pa\u00e7o Imperial in Rio de Janeiro<\/p>\n
